Description
Innovative technological solution for the automatic inspection of battery pack defects in production lines. The prototype is based on a 2D and 3D vision system, automation with linear motorised axes to guarantee flexibility in the analysis of different battery modules, and proprietary software based on AI and ruled-based algorithms.
The visual inspection system contributes to the goals of zero-defect manufacturing, highly efficient and sustainable flexible production. It also enables use in low-volume production lines, typical of emerging e-mobility SMEs.
Result to be enhanced
The automatic battery pack defect inspection station responds to a market need that allows it to be fully exploited beyond the scope of the project. The possibility of X and Y movement over a wide range combined with repeatability and speed of movement make it suitable for measurements and inspections on other battery module components. In addition, it can be adapted by accommodating different types of measurement and acquisition systems for non-contact measurement and surface inspection of other sizes and objects with overall dimensions of less than 800×800 mm. The algorithms developed in the project enable the analysis of both 2D and 3D data, i.e. information on the height of parts, with an accuracy of less than a hundredth of a mm.
Why is it important?
The developed prototype adopts innovative technological solutions and algorithms. Its primary area of use, the production of battery modules for e-mobility, is of crucial interest to the area.
The project enhanced the collaboration between two SMEs, a supplier of industrial vision and non-contact measurement solutions, and an end-user manufacturer of battery packs for mobility.
