MADI
Newly developed wireless automatic monitoring system for buildings, roads, and industrial infrastructure.
Description
The project has resulted in a newly developed wireless automatic monitoring system for buildings, roads, and industrial infrastructure. The system is based on a wireless sensor network of multifunctional sensors embedded in a textile base of composite material that can be easily applied to the surfaces of the structural elements to be monitored. The devices are equipped with innovative features that enable them to measure physical quantities in the dynamic range by acquiring a high amount of data. Within the project, a data management platform was developed to acquire and process a high amount of data by operating automatic modal analyses for the long-term structural assessment. The final interpretation of the results is carried out with the aid of Machine Learning techniques, enabling the analysis of structures with prescriptive and predictive purposes to determine their safety status in relation to natural and anthropogenic hazards.

Why is it important?
The project has been particularly focused on current and highly relevant topics, such as infrastructure safety, the integration of SMART systems, and IoT, representing a step forward towards control systems that can become intelligent—able to communicate and guide safety and infrastructure management operators on a territorial scale. This solution is therefore of particular interest for the management of road infrastructures, where the integration with new technologies under development in the automotive field (SMART Roads, sustainable mobility, etc.) is easily envisioned.
This aspect also has spin-offs at the level of research and civil engineering in general. The development of technologies akin to the one tested in this project can open up new, completely unexplored, and multidisciplinary research fields. This opens up scenarios that can then attract national and international funding, scenarios that are certainly revolutionary for structural and infrastructure management standards.
