WATERPLASMA
Project Ô demonstrates how small-scale water reuse can be beneficial in reducing pressure on a water management system while enabling a vision of a circular water economy.
Description
The project provides tools and approaches for water reuse/recycling while assessing social acceptability and system effects. Four demonstration sites have been selected in the project each hosting a pilot module combining several advanced water treatment technologies tailored to the specific needs of users at each site. The first demonstration site is located in Lecce, Italy. The challenge is to treat small, localized groundwater sources that have been contaminated by microorganisms and seawater intrusion to achieve drinking water quality through nanofiltration and innovative pulsed discharge plasma (PDP) treatment.
Project and Acronym: Waterplasma
Innovation Cluster to contact: Mesap
Topics: circular water economy, water reuse/recycling
Why is it important?
Our goal goes beyond preserving precious water: we aim to usher in a new era of sustainability in the industry. Our cutting-edge and innovative approach will significantly reduce freshwater consumption, mitigating negative environmental impacts and promoting the circular use of resources.
Application example: In Northwest Italy, the textile industry is a key economic driver. However, despite its importance, the adoption of sustainable practices remains limited. Our project seeks to fully realize the industry’s potential by introducing innovative and sustainable technologies that will foster a radical transition to a green and digital economy.
By integrating principles of green chemistry, sustainability, and bioeconomy, we aim to create an interdisciplinary system that reduces the use of natural resources through safe technologies while minimizing the environmental impacts of the industries involved. Our vision aligns with the Europe 2020 strategy for a resource-efficient Europe and the EU Sustainable Development Strategy. Through sustainable waste management and material recovery, our project will enhance the environmental and market acceptability of products within the industry.
