Biofids
Patent for a system for converting hydrogen sulfide into molecular sulfur.
Description
The BIOFIDS project (Photobioreactor for BIOlogical DeSulfurization of bIogas) aims to transfer technology from an ENEA patent through the realization of a prototype plant based on the process of anoxygenic photosynthesis operated by Green Sulphur Bacteria (GSB) through which H2S is oxidized to elemental sulfur in the presence of light.
Result to be enhanced
BIOFIDS is a technological choice with some distinctive features:
– Reduced energy demand through the use of low-power LEDs and high life time,
– Use of a natural process, anoxigenic photosynthesis, operated by the bacterium C. limicola, common in natural environments,
– Complete recycling of organic matter in waste biomass with the production of bio-sulfur, a by-product with various potential uses.
Why is it important?
The success of the project could have a spillover effect on the region, driving growth in the reference sector and promoting the energy valorization of organic waste and effluents. This would lead to an improvement in the environmental impact of processes related to anaerobic digestion (AD), with positive effects on production efficiency. The new technology for biological desulfurization of biogas presents a potential line of development for a technologically advanced and innovative system, with positive employment outcomes.
Having demonstrated its cost-effectiveness and economic sustainability, the new system could replace desulfurization modules currently used in small/medium-sized AD plants. The biogas—and potentially biomethane—production chain will be enhanced with a bio-sulfur product that has the potential to increase farm profits.
Furthermore, the bacterial biomass separated downstream of the photobioreactor can be reused as an inoculum, and the excess biomass can be fed into the AD process, enhancing its potential and eliminating the need for waste disposal.
